Google’s AI Achieves 92.6% in Providing Accurate Medical Answers

Posted on August 21, 2023

A study conducted by Google researchers and published in Nature highlights the success of the tech giant’s generative AI technology, Med-PaLM, in providing accurate medical answers. Med-PaLM aligned with scientific consensus on 92.6% of questions, almost matching clinician-generated responses at 92.9%.

Med-PaLM: The Breakthrough AI

Google’s Med-PaLM, powered by Large Language Models (LLMs), effectively addresses medical queries. The study utilized MultiMedQA, a compilation of six medical question datasets, and HealthSearchQA, which contains commonly searched medical queries.

Fine-Tuning for Accuracy

To enhance accuracy, researchers introduced instruction prompt tuning, resulting in Med-PaLM. This AI model provided substantially more accurate answers (92.9%) than its predecessor Flan-PaLM (61.9%). Moreover, Med-PaLM showed a significantly lower potential for harmful outcomes compared to Flan-PaLM.

Potential for Healthcare Transformation

While acknowledging the need for further development and evaluation, Google researchers envision Med-PaLM revolutionizing medical information access. With rigorous safety validation, Med-PaLM could support clinicians, alleviate administrative burdens, aid decision-making, and enhance patient care.

Sarah West, managing director of AI Now Institute, a policy research center, said that while publishing in a scientific journal demonstrates some academic oversight of Google’s findings, it’s an insufficient standard for being ready to use the AI system in real health-care settings. “There’s all kinds of information that you would want to know, in order to meaningfully evaluate a system before it’s deployed into commercial use,” she said. “And you need to look at this system at the level of each hospital, if they’re going to be doing any kind of customization of a system for a particular clinical setting.”

Continued Advancements in Medical AI

In a previous test, Med-PaLM 2 exhibited expert-level performance in U.S. Medical Licensing Examination-style questions. Google also introduced the AI-enabled Claims Acceleration Suite to streamline insurance processes, underlining the company’s commitment to transforming healthcare through innovative AI solutions.

TL;DR:

Google’s Med-PaLM AI technology demonstrates promising accuracy in medical question answering, aligning with scientific consensus. With further refinement, this AI could revolutionize healthcare by aiding clinicians, reducing administrative burdens, and enhancing patient care.
