Charting New Waters: Saronic’s $55M Investment in Autonomous Surface Vessels

Posted on October 10, 2023

Saronic, a pioneering company in maritime autonomy for surface vessels, has secured a whopping $55 million in Series A funding. Leading the charge was Caffeinated Capital, with notable contributors such as 8VC, Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and several others. This investment is a testament to Saronic’s dedication to bridging key capability gaps in the maritime realm via cutting-edge, autonomous platforms. These funds are earmarked to boost research, development, and amplify in-house manufacturing to ensure swift production.

Navy Collaborations and Demonstrations

In a significant demonstration, Saronic’s prototype – the Spyglass ASV – showcased its capabilities in its maiden open-water exercise alongside the US Navy. Additionally, key Navy figures, Adm. Lisa Franchetti and Rear Adm. Keith B. Davids, were seen discussing the 6ft Spyglass ASV at the prestigious 2023 International Seapower Symposium.

Why This Matters: Outpacing Global Competitors

The urgency for such autonomous surface vessels is palpable. As the US aims to outmaneuver China, the nation needs to start constructing a substantial fleet of autonomous vessels without delay. Saronic offers a holistic solution for the US and its allies by blending top-notch software and hardware, thereby augmenting the naval fleet’s range, capability, and durability.

Dino Mavrookas, Saronic’s CEO, emphasized the unique position of the company, stating, “Saronic stands apart. We prioritize software, autonomy, and mission profiles, enabling us to rapidly design, produce, and deploy a new class of autonomous vessels ready for today’s and tomorrow’s challenges.”

State-of-the-art Vessel Innovations

Raymond Tonsing from Caffeinated Capital, the primary investor, expressed his admiration for Saronic’s rapid strides in naval technology, lauding the company as a transformative force set to redefine naval operations for the coming century.

Saronic’s current projects include Spyglass, a 6-foot vessel, and Cutlass, a 13-foot counterpart. Both are equipped with software that can be updated remotely and are versatile enough to carry varied payloads, even in areas with compromised communication and GPS. Crafted to be resilient, these vessels present low life-cycle expenses and ample scope for scaling.

Joe Lonsdale of 8VC remarked on the exceptional talents at Saronic, ranging from innovation pioneers to experienced military and defense professionals, all working harmoniously to cater to pressing naval needs.

Rob Lehman, the Chief Commercial Officer of Saronic, expressed gratitude for the trust vested in them by seasoned investors and emphasized the funding’s pivotal role in propelling their growth and delivery trajectory.

A Blend of Vision and Expertise

At its core, Saronic is a defense enterprise, amalgamating innovative minds, battle-hardened military experts, and top-tier engineers, all with a shared vision of advancing autonomy in the naval domain. The significant investment they’ve garnered speaks volumes about the industry’s confidence in their ability to swiftly deliver tailored autonomous solutions in the contemporary naval arena.

TL;DR

Saronic, a maritime autonomy pioneer, has bagged $55 million in Series A funding to advance its autonomous naval vessels. Their prototype, the Spyglass ASV, has already shown promise in collaboration with the US Navy. As the race to dominate the seas intensifies, Saronic aims to be at the forefront with its blend of innovative technology, expert talent, and vision for the future.
